When the first U.S. spacecraft landed there because there was a flag posted on the side of the craft. Neil Armstrong planted a flag on a small staff soon after landing as well.

This was on July 20th 1969.

As a sign that they had succesfully reached the moon. The US is a party to international agreements that prevent it from claiming any part of outer space, including the Moon.

They also placed a plaque that said "we came in peace for all mankind".
