This is not a complete history... The first books had no covers but were scrolls. The first 'book' was created (invented is the wrong word for early book making) around China in 868 CE, but authorities believe it may have been much earlier. The Gutenberg press was invented around 1440 A.D. Note that all books were hardcover (paper back of today did not come into popular use until the 1900s.) The printing press allowed for mass manufacture of book copies. Before that, type was made on wood blocks.
The textbook, as we commonly recognize it today, emerged during the Middle Ages around the 16th century with the advancements in printing technology. Johannes Gutenberg's invention of the printing press in the mid-15th century revolutionized the process of producing books and allowed for the mass production of textbooks for educational use.
The book as we know it (called a Codex) with pages bound to a spine was invented sometime between 100 BC and 1 AD as a more convenient and portable version of the papyrus scroll. By the 5th century they had almost completely replaced scrolls.
The Codex was also independently invented in the New World by both the Aztecs and the Mayans.
The first book was invented in the 1700's.
