The original Bass Guitar was developed by Paul Tutmarc in the 1930s as a replacement for the double bass, but he received little success for the invention. In the 1950s Leo Fender (who, obviously, is the man who started Fender) took the idea and introduced the first mass-produced bass guitar on the market, the Precision bass. This was hugely popular and since then bass Guitars have become the norm in all bands, and variations upon the Precision are still made and extremely popular.

∙ 15y agoLeo Fender was working with solidbody guitar prototypes as early as the late 1940s. The Fender Broadcaster guitar was first produced in 1950, but by 1952 was renamed the Telecaster due to a trademark issue with Gretsch. In between, Fender actually produced some of these guitars with no brand name (just "Fender" on the headstock); those guitars are quite rare and are known today as "No-casters". The first Fender Stratocaster was produced in 1954.

∙ 14y agoThe first bass guitar was invented by Paul Tutmarc in Seattle, Washington, USA in the early 1930's. It was known as the "Electric Bass Fiddle," and appeared in a catalog by Tutmarc's company, Audiovox, in 1935. Much smaller than the double bass, this bass was easier to carry. This bass was not fretted, however, and was not quite as popular as its descendant.
The "Electric Bass Fiddle" design was innovated greatly by Leo Fender, founder of what is now known as Fender Musical Instruments Corporation. Using a telecaster-body design, Fender came out with the "Precision Bass," a.k.a. "P-Bass" in 1951. It was fretted like a guitar, which allowed players greater ease in playing in tune (hence the name: "Precision Bass"). Not only was this model easier to carry than a double bass, but it was also much easier to play in tune. This model was extremely popular and was the first bass guitar as we know it today.

A good quality bass is at minimum 300$, now not to say a bass under that is bad, bass guitars depend on what genre you play. Example, Fender is a good punk rock bass, but I have a classic Fender P-Bass at 210$. it is an amazing punk bass for the price. So I personally wouldn't relate a bass to money and quality, some bass guitars are good for some kinds of music, and some are not. Find out what genre you like, and buy a recommended bass for that genre.
