1950, but REALLY in 1953, nationwide in 1954.... I'll try to explain....

CBS broadcasted the first color shows, for 2 weeks in Jan. 1950, in Washington, D.C. Unfortunately, it could only be received by about two dozen sets.

The first commercially-sponsored network broadcast in color was broadcasted by five east coast (NY area) CBS affiliates on June 25, 1951 (it was a musical-variety special named "Premiere"). The first color tv sets weren't available to the public until Sept. 1951, so the shows were played in public areas on sets from CBS, to demonstrate "color" tv. The first color tv sets weren't available to the public until Sept. 1951, and only about 100 were sold. The technology used was not back-wards compatible with regular sets...The 12 million existing b&w sets could only see a blank screen.

In October 1951, CBS stopped production of the sets, and stopped airing in color, but RCA was on its way to producing a "compatible" color system to allow color sets AND b&w sets to watch the same broadcast.

Aug. 1953, the first broadcast in "compatible" color TV of a network program was presented by NBC of "St. George and the Dragon" on the "Kukla, Fran, and Ollie Show"

In Dec. 1953, CBS aired the first commercial TV program in color, "Dragnet".

NBC made the first coast-to-coast color broadcast when it telecast the Tournament of Roses Parade on January 1, 1954

The first color television set that was made?

The very first color television was made by John Logie Baird, the man that also demonstrated the first black and white working television system in 1925. Not content with seeing his development used by the BBC in England to broadcast the first public TV service, he went on to produce a color version. His creativity was impressive but the technology of the day limited his color television to experiments. In 1939, he produced a proposal that set out the future of commercial color television and high definition images. Although it was left to others to deliver commercial color television, his proposals were one of the triggers for the development work. Color television was first broadcast publicly in the early 1950s but it was in 1954 that NTSC color signals were first broadcast as part of American network television services. The same color system remains in use today. In the UK, color broadcasts didn't start until 1968 using a similar but incompatible color encoding system. So take your pick of dates: 1929, 1953, 1954 or 1968.
