The earliest known flushing toilets were in the Indus Valley in the 26th century BC. Flush toilets were also used in Crete and the Roman Empire.

Sir John Harrington, in 1596, designed a toilet with a flush valve. Another name associated with toilets is Thomas Crapper, whose company built toilets in the late 1800s designed by Albert Gilbin.
