The first spacecraft sent to Mars was the Soviet Union's Mars 1M No.1, also known as "Marsnik 1", which launched on October 10th, 1960. It was lost in a launch failure.
The first spacecraft to do a flyby of Mars was NASA's Mariner 4, which launched on November 28th, 1964. The flyby was conducted on July 14-15th of that same year.
Six years later, NASA's Mariner 9 was the first spacecraft to enter orbit around the planet of Mars on November 14th, 1971.
Lastly, the first spacecraft to make contact with the surface of Mars was the Soviet Union's Mars 2, which touched down on November 27th, 1971.

∙ 15y agoHumans have not gone past our moon in our solar system. Our probes to other places started just with flybys; 1st was Mariner 3 & 4 starting in 1964 then Mariner 6 & 7. The orbiters that came later included Mariner 8 & 9, Viking 1 & 2, Mars Observer, Mars Global Surveyor, Mars Climate Orbiter, 2001 Mars Odyssey, Mars Express, and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Missions that actually included landing on mars included: Viking 1-2, Pathfinder, Polar Lander/Deep Space 2, Mars Exploration Rovers.
There are no planned manned missions to mars at the moment; more landings on the moon need to be run to shake out the technology - 3 days is much easier than 6 months!
