"A Christmas Carol" was first published on December 19, 1843 by Chapman & Hall in London. Charles Dickens funded the publication himself as he felt strongly about the themes of the story. The book was published in a cloth-bound edition with hand-colored illustrations by John Leech.

Although A Christmas Carol was published in London by Chapman and Hall on 19 December 1843 just in time for the Christmas book trade, another first edition of the same book, although minus most of Leech's illustrations, was published at about the same time as the result of a recently negotiated agreementt between the Baron Christian Bernard Tauchnitz in Leipzig and the Dickens.

It appears that Dickens had early proofs of A Christmas Carol sent to Tauchnitz, and this edition was advertised in Germany on December 8, 1843 as appearing "later this month, simultaneously with the London edition."

Its initial print of 6000 leather bound copies priced Five shillings in UK money were made one week before Christmas. The publishers of the time did not want to invest in its printing citing the fact that they felt the book would fail. Within one week the books had sold out and there was a massive demand for more. Thereafter the publishers sponsored the print of another 6000 copies
