I have been unable to find any reference to the statue ever having been stolen. For more information relating to the statue see the related link below.
It was stolen by Edinburgh Uni students in 1959, and subsequently recovered (obviously).
It was stolen for a second time in June 1966, and was recovered two days later at the foot of the Royal Mile. I know this because it was me (and 2 others) who took it.

Bobby died in 1872 and could not be buried within the cemetery itself, since it was and remainsconsecrated ground. He was buried instead just inside the gate of Greyfriars Kirkyard, not far from John Gray's grave.
