This notion was first suggested as early as 1596 by the Dutch map maker Abraham Ortelius in his work 'Thesaurus Geographicus'. Alfred Wegener came up with the theory of Plate Tectonics (Continental Drift Theory). In 1911, he discovered that dinosaur fossils of the same species were found on different continents across the oceans. No dinosaur could have swum that far. Therefore, he concluded that all the continents were joined together at first. Since the continents are split up now, something must have been moving them. And he came up with the idea of plate tectonics.

In 1912, he publicly advocated the theory of "continental drift", arguing that all the continents were once joined together in a single landmass and have drifted apart. However, no one believed him at first, and thought that he was joking. He was also not a good speaker, and thus did not manage to convince them. In 1915, he published a book called "(Die Entstehung der Kontinente und Ozeane)", which means The Origins of Continents and Oceans, which contained his explanations and evidences to his proposed theory. His theory was later accepted after years of proving and research.

By the mid- 1960s twin ideas of moving continents and a moving sea floor were causing great excitement and emotional debate among geologists.By the late 1960s these ideas had been combined into a single theory that revolutionized geology by providing a unifying framework for earth science - the theory of plate techtonics.

In 1915 the first edition of The Origin of Continents and Oceans, a book outlining the Continental Drift theory of Alfred Lothar Wegener, a German meterologist, was published; expanded editions were published in 1920, 1922, and 1929. About 300 million years ago, claimed Wegener, the continents had formed a single mass, called Pangaea (from the Greek for "all the Earth"). Pangaea had split, and its pieces had been moving away from each other ever since. Wegener was not the first to suggest that the continents had once been connected, but he was the first to present extensive evidence from several fields.

it wasnt accepted. Wegener's theory of continetal drift wasnt accepted. the theory of plate tectonics was created when scientists discovered about sea floor spreading and magnetic reversals. but i dont know when the theory of plate tectonics was created. so you can ask about that.

The theory of plate tectonics was accepted after the discovery of sea floor spreading.
