1970, when they were a cabaret act called Festfolket and Benny and Bjorn's "Hej, Gamle Man" song was famous. Most people think ABBA started in 1972 with "People Need Love". 1972 was their first year as a pop group under the long-winded name of Bjorn & Benny, Agnetha & Anni-Frid.
The four principal members of ABBA first performed together in Cyprus in 1970 but their home was in Stockholm, Sweden. All four were successful musicians in Sweden before they came together as a quartet. At the heart of the group were Benny Andersson, who was the keyboardist for Sweden's top rock band in the 60s, and Bjorn Ulvaeus, who was the lead singer for the country's top folk band. They started writing and performing together in 1966. In 1969 they met their future wives (Anni-Frid Lyngstad [Benny] and Agnetha Faltskog [Bjorn]) who started doing backup on Benny and Bjorn's music. After performing together in Swedish clubs and on the Festfolk circuit, they released their first record as a group in 1972 and adopted the acronym ABBA a few months later.
