The use of damascus barrels on guns began to decrease pretty rapidly after 1900, although they were still fairly common up until the start of WWI. If you have a breech loading gun with damascus barrels it will probably date from 1875 - 1910. Most damascus barrels on U.S. guns seem to have actually made in Belgium. There is a lot of debate as to whether any damascus barrels for shotguns were actually made in the U.S. It seems likely there may have been small numbers produced in the U.S. However, Belgium had a large gunmaking trade at the time, with a lot of barrel makers specializing in damascus barrels, so it was generallly cheaper to import them than to make them.

When was the shotgun made by eclypse gun co. The damascus double barrel with hammers?

Eclipse Gun Company is a name found on Belgian manufactured double barrels from around 1900-1916. The manufacturer was Henri Pieper. Please note that the Damascus barrels were meant for BLACK POWDER shotshells, and should not be fired with modern day ammo.

What is the difference in a damascus barrel?

Damascus steel is made by folding a mild steel together with a high-carbon steel to make it stronger, and gives it a pretty pattern. Problem with Damascus barrels is that, while they work fine with low pressure black powder loads, modern smokeless shotshells are likely to cause the barrel to rupture, which is bad. If a shotgun has a Damascus barrel, it's very old and probably just a wall-hanger.

At what serial number did Lefever change from damascus to steel barrels?

There was no specific date, you could order them either way for many years, damascus was usually the more expensive of the two. I'm quite sure though that any Lefevers made by Ithaca had "steel" barrels (although there probably were some Lefever made guns left over and sold by Ithaca). Ithaca acquired Lefever something around 1916.

Is the smokeless powder steel and damascus the same?

No. "Smokeless powder steel" or fluid steel, or other terms, mean modern, billet steel. Damascus, twist, or welded barrels are made of forge-welded twisted wire and rods. There are potential weak spots in the twists, and over time, burning propellant and corrosive residue eat at the gaps and make them more prominent. Eventually, the barrel will fail. Damascus barrels are only safe with custom black powder loaded cartridges within their pressure limits, NOT with modern ammunition. There is a strong risk of a chamber explosion.

How do you telll a damascus shoyun barrel?

You will notice many small lines, circular lines through the steel. Damascus is actually laminated steel which could accept the much lighter pressure made by black powder shot shells. If the fine lines are visible in an area where the steel is lightly worn, then the barrel is likely damascus. If the lines are not visible, it is possibly "fluid" steel, meaning that it's not damascus. Up until early in the 20th century, gun manufacturers attempted to duplicate the appearance of damascus on what were stronger barrels. In either case, do not shoot the gun until you have had a gunsmith check it out.

What is a damascus or twisted barrel?

A damascus barrel is a barrel made of damascus steel, which is steel produced by hammering two different steels together. The twist refers to the pieces of steel being twisted while they are hammered, which produces the distinctive pattern on the steel.

What is a Damascus shotgun?

Damascus is a method of making laminated barrels. A series of wires is braided and hammer-welded to create a distinctive pattern of loops and swirls. Well-made Damascus barrels were the best available before modern steel and many well-maintained 100-year-old Damascus guns are still being used. On the other hand if the gun has not been properly cared for, hidden rust pockets may have compromised the barrels and cause a dramatic failure. If you are tempted to fire an old shotgun, have it inspected by a qualified gunsmith first.
