The Middle Colonies were not exactly founded, though Henry Hudson discovered the area where the middle colonies would be built in 1609. The Dutch then took over soon after. In the 1630's there was a bit of a battle between the Dutch and the Swedes over this land, which the Swedes lost, resulting in the land being called New Netherland by the Dutch. However, England then came along and took away this land from the Dutch in the 1660s, and renamed it New York after the Duke of York, James II.
Pennsylvania was founded by William Penn in 1681, English Quakers and other Europeans seeking freedom and equality.
