However some some historians would argue that enough men supported women getting the vote before WW1, however the outbreak of war itself stopped the movement as many women stopped campaigning so they could support Britain in the war. Basically they would of got the vote anyway but the first world war postponed the act.

The right of Women to vote has had a spotty history in the US.

In 1756 Lydia Chapin Taft was permitted to vote in three town meetings in Uxbridge, Massachusetts.

One of the first woman's right's support's was Abigail Adams as you can see by a letter she penned to her husband John during the creation of the Declaration of Independence, March 31, 1776, "I long to hear that you have declared an independency. And, by the way, in the new code of laws which I suppose it will be necessary for you to make, I desire you would remember the ladies and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors."

Women were able to vote in New Jersey after its incorporation as a state if they were able to establish that they were property owners with a value of £50, but that right was revoked in 1807.

Women gained the right to vote in 1869 in the Wyoming Territory and 1870 in the Utah Territory, but the US Congress attacked the law in 1887 with the Edmunds-Tucker Act in a direct attack against the LDS church. Edmunds-Tucker was upheld 19 May 1890 with the Supreme Court decision in Late Corporation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints et al v. United States, 136 U.S. 1 (1890) {see the related link below}. Women regained the right to vote in Utah in 1896 by adoption of the new state's constitution.

Women were given the right to vote in Colorado in 1893 by popular vote, and the state of Idaho granted the right in 1896 by statewide approval of a constitutional amendment.

The right to vote for all US citizens was finally guaranteed 18 August 1920 with the passage of the 19th Amendment.

Almost from the birth of the US, the right to vote has been actively opposed by the men in power. Every step of the way activists and supporters have made names for themselves in history: Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Julia Ward Howe, Lucy Stone, Henry Blackwell, Josephine Ruffin, Ernestine Rose, Frances Wright, Lucretia Mott, Margaret Fuller, and far too many others to list.

With the passage of the 19th amendment in 1920 women in the United States were able to vote, but because of "Jim Crow" laws black women still couldn't vote. This won't happen until 1965 with the passage of the Civil Rights and voting acts.
