On average the imagery in Google Maps and Google Earth is 3 years old but imagery is updated once or twice a month as bulk updates. Each update could typically contains many small region often often from multiple countries.

For example, there was an update on Feb 27th 2014 with areas from around the globe but many of those updates are for regions 10 or 50 square miles in size.

You can signup with Google using a new service called 'Follow Your World' to get e-mail notifications when a given area has been updated.

Google also maintains a KML file that lists all areas in the current and previous updates with red bounding boxes, which you can view in Google Earth.
