In NJ and some parts of New York we've seen bucks chasing does already but the does arent ready. I don't know if the rut has fully kicked in for the bucks, but this weekend (oct. 23) is a great moonphase to hunt, so if the rut is starting now like i think it is, Saturday will be great.
It seems that the highest rut level occurs in the last few days of October into the first part of November. Many rely on the first full moon within this time frame, but it is tough to pinpoint the peak rut in relation to the moon. Colder weather will trigger mother nature to begin the mating process and the whitetail will start moving more often in order to feed before winter sets in. I have read about and experienced many intense rut hunts in the first half of November, just remember that weather can change everything!
Usually, by the first of November, rut activity is being seen.
The rut starts five days after the full moon in November.

Peak Breeding is Nov. 12th. As a hunter, the 2 most important weekends to be in the woods in 2010(as is most years) is Oct. 30th and Nov. 6th.
During the rut which takes place generally in November. May also work in the post-rut which usually is in December.
First two weeks of November are the most active.

The South Carolina deer rut or the peak of rut season for the Piedmont is between October 15th and November 15th.
2010 is predicted to be a great hunting year. Because of the low buck harvest of 2009 and the rut of 2010 the size of bucks and also the number of bucks harvested this year should be something to remember. A large number of folks in the hunting fold believe that the deer rut usually occurs during the hunters moon. The hunters moon is the 2nd full moon following the first day of fall. In 2010 That moon would fall on the 22nd of October. Now most would say that is much too soon for the rut, but research has shown that the hunters moon is a fact and that deer DO rut during this moon. As long as the deer herd is healthy and the deer are not extremely stressed. Now the best part of 2010 is that you will also have a good chance at the November full moon to hunt a 2nd phase rut. Some will believe that the cooler weather and shorter daylight hours will be the big reason for the deer to rut on this moon. Either way Im looking foword to it. There are phases of the rut such as seeking, chasing, ect. So when it all boils down to it I believe that the best time to be in the woods hunting the rut in 2010 is October 18th-24 and also November 15th-24th. Good luck

The Autumnal Equinox for 2011 is September 23rd. The second full moon after is an approximate time frame for the Deer Rut to generally Begin. This would put the Projected 2011 Rut on or about November 10th.
