∙ 10y agoIt was mainly to do with the fact that the USSR wanted to place several Eastern European countries under Communist rule, thus expanding it's sphere of influence further Westwards. At the end of the war, many Central and Eastern European nations had no Government at all- their previous Governments had either been swept away by the Nazis when Germany occupied the countries, or their Governments had actively collaborated with Hitler and served as puppet leaderships, a bit like the Vichy regime in France or the Quisling Government in Norway. Such regimes collapsed when the Third Reich fell. Stalin wanted Eastern Europe's war-ravaged nations to become Communist, as well as for Germany to be divided with half of it under Communist Government, to ensure that there was absolutely no possibility of Germany becoming a strong power again, reviving Fascism and occupying Central Europe for a second time. Such a scenario would have been a great threat to the Soviet Union, which suffered terribly in the war against Hitler. Whilst the Western powers agreed that Germany should not be enabled to 'rise' again, many Western politicians disliked the idea of Eastern Europe becoming Communist nations. They felt that this was expanding Russia's sphere of influence too far Westwards for comfort, and posed a possible threat to the stability of the West. They knew that Stalin was a brutal hardliner who would accept little compromise, and what a dangerous man he could be to deal with. They were afraid that with a Communist East directly fronting on to a Capitalist West, with no central region to act as a buffer between them, quarrels and disputes could ensue that had the potential to escalate into all-out war.
