You probably should speak with the hospital's social worker as you make your plans. The hospital will not release you until you are doing well, but independence and freedom from pain may be weeks away. You may need time in a rehab facility to get physical therapy to regain strength, get wound treatment and be cared for on site. If you go home, your caregiver will need to take you to these various places, which is extremely tiring. If you are older, it can take four to six months to get up and going, even if there's no other factors.
