Embryonic stem cells, those derived from embryos, are part of the early development of a fertilized egg known as the blastocyst. These cells are thought to be pluripotent, which means that they can develop into any type of cell tissue, such as blood, bone, or brain. . All of the 230 different types of cells in the body come from three embryonic layers - one develops into brain and spinal cord cells, another into cells of the digestive system and liver, and a third into bone and muscle. Adult stem cells on the other hand arise in various parts of the child or adult body and seem to be limited as to how they can specialize. They are called multipotent . An example of an adult stem cell is a blood stem cell that originates in the bone marrow and can form red and white blood cells or platelets for the blood stream. Other sites for adult stem cells are the brain (neuronal cells), muscles, the nose, fat tissue, and the liver. Umbilical cords contain stem cells in the blood supply found running through these cords.
There are 3 different types of stem cells; embryonic, adult and induced pluripotent stem cells.
1. Adult stem cells are part of the normal repair system of the mammalian body. These have been extracted from a number of different tissues, but usually the source is bone marrow, adipose tissue , and blood.
2. Embryonic stem cells are isolated from the inner cell mass of a blastocyst (that evolves into the embryo).
3. Induced pluripotent stem cells come from regular adult cells like skin cells that are then transformed (regressed to an embryonic state) into stem cells.

A stem cell can be found anywhere on the human body. The function of a stem cell is to produce specialised cells where there are none to help the body; without them we would be nothing. A stem cell can only make the specialised cell of the part of body they are at, e.g. the red blood cell if they are in the blood stream.
