Coal mines in Hamilton County IowaI know that one coal mine was located in section 10 of Webster Township. It was the Stockdale Mine on land owned by L.L. Peese in 1896. A man named Jim Thompson operated the mine, and three or four helpers were employed to run it. The mine was located on both sides of the ravine. The mining was done first on the north side of the ravine until the vein ran out. Then the operation was switched to the south side. This was the only mine in the county that mined from a tunnel and it had a higher sulfur content than other coal in the area. The others mines in the county were strip mines but I am not sure where those were located. The Stockdale Mine was closed up by the 1930's.

Wyoming, the country's dominant surface mining state, has 17 surface mines that produced 368.7 million short tons of coal in 2001. This represented 49 percent of all surface-mined coal and 33 percent of all coal mined in the United States
Coal is primarily dug from underground mines. These mines are typically located in coal-rich regions and are accessed by tunnels and shafts. Surface mining methods, such as strip mining or mountaintop removal, may also be used in areas where the coal seam is close to the surface.

Coal may be mined in underground mines, typically by machinery that pulls the coal from the seams, and transports it to the surface. Coal is also mined in surface mines by removing the soil and rock on top of the coal, and then using machinery to break the coal from the seams, and move it to storage.
In 2001 there were 759 surface coal mines in the United States, which produced 745.3 million short tons of coal.
There are a total of fifty-two coal mines in the United States. The state with the most collieries is Wyoming which has thirteen coal mines and they are surface mines.
There are no active coal mines in Telford, as the last coal mine in the area closed in the 1970s. Telford is located in Shropshire, which historically had coal mining activity, but the industry has since declined.
