NOTE TO ODYSSEYWARE TEACHERS:

It is easy for students to use a multiple click strategy to pass classes in Odysseyware. This strategy takes advantage of the pass threshold set for lessons. The higher the pass threshold, the more times a student must attempt the lesson, but also the more chances he or she will get to eliminate wrong choices. High pass thresholds for students who wish to use this strategy do not pose any problem (and actually gives their grade a boost since lessons will average at least the pass threshold).

This is how it works: On the first attempt, the student selects the first option for every multiple choice question and submits the lesson. The resulting score will be between 20 and 30%, just based on chance. On the second attempt, the student selects the second answer on the questions she missed the first time around and submits. This should get the score up into the 50's (worse case scenario for the student at this stage is to pass the threshold too early). On the third attempt, the student has a 50-50 chance to get the remaining questions right (and some OW questions only have 3 options!), so they should easily score in the 70's-80's.

Now, the problem for the student is that they haven't learned anything. So when they take the quiz, they get a score between 20 and 30, sometimes with luck, mid-30's. However, due to weighting, the quizzes and tests usually are outweighed by the lessons, so the student passes if they need a 60 for a D.

The solution to this problem is to set the pass threshold on lessons low (a high pass threshold does not ensure rigor), have tests, quizzes, and project outweigh lessons, do not allow more than one attempt on quizzes and tests. If you suspect a student is utilizing the multiple click strategy, you can tell by a grade a profile. If the student is consistently passing lessons with high grades 70s, 80s, but with multiple attempts, then bombing the quizzes with 27's or so, then that is a pretty sure indicator!
