Follow the imprint that you made with the marking device with your knife, but be sure to only remove the carpet, do not remove the padding underneath. After removing the damaged area, use it to create an outline on the extra carpeting. After this is done, you can cut out the new piece, and then place it in the void left by the old carpeting, while making sure that it is facing the right way. Finally, place something heavy over the carpet, so that it can fully integrate with the rest of the carpet.
