Heavy shot, similarly to steel shot is NOT appropriate for use in older shotguns and WILL damage the weapon. Do NOT use steel shot, tungsten shot or heavy-shot in any weapon that is not designed for steel shot. Any shot gun that can shoot steel shot will explicitly say so. If your manual does not say you can use steel shot, you CANNOT use it or any of the other hard shots like tungsten or heavy-shot.

Your only options to shoot are lead, bismuth or tungsten composite shot. Tungesten composite will sometimes be called tungsten polymer. Shot that you can use in your older shotgun WILL say its OK for older guns on the package.

Precision reloading has bismuth shot, but its ungodly expensive at about 140 dollars for 6.5lbs. (most steel alternatives are very expensive, at 3-10x the cost of conventional shells.

At this cost, comparing it to a commerically available bismuth shell of #6 shot, then you need 1.6oz of shot per shell, which means a few less than 100 2-3/4" shells per 6.6lb container or or about 1.40 each for just the shot.

Huntersbismuth.com seems to make claims about being able to reloads for less than a dollar a shell, but I think they are just selling bulk metal and you have to make it into shot yourself, which is a process Im looking into but am not familiar with. He is selling the metal for about $6.50 a lb,or $43 per 6.6lbs,or about 45 cents per shell for the bismuth, which is something I could live with.

If you have to pay the absurd prices for the bismuth shells, your shotgun is essentially useless for hunting. Just go shell out a 2-300 for a modern one that can use steel shot and you will still come out ahead, rather than shelling out that same 300 for a box of bismuth shells. Personally, Im going to check into the hunters bismuth, or see if I can get it even cheaper and make my own because I have a few very nice shotguns that I would really like to use if it can be done economicly.

Can you use bismuth shells in a full choke shotgun?

You can not use. Or should not use. The wad stays with shot exiting. I suggest improved cylinder or bore

What element is made for shotgun shells?

Not sure I understand your question. Lead is used in a lot of (but not all) shotshells. Barium, Bismuth, Copper, Tin, Carbon, Nitrogen, and Hydrogen are also found in most shot shells.

What are the types of shotgun shells?

Shot and Slug

What do shotgun shells have?

Hull, primer, powder, shot, shot cup or shot wads.

Will bismuth shotgun shells damage an old shotgun?

Bismuth shotgun shells will not damage older shotguns. The only exception are Damascus and twist steel barrels. Bismuth shotshells are made from a patented bismuth alloy which produces a shot which is soft like lead, meaning it moves smoothly through the gun barrel. Instron compression tests indicate that bismuth will deform at 723 lbs. of pressure. This compares favorably to lead, and is lower than any other non-toxic shot, inlcuding steel, tungsten, and tungsten alloys. All of these shots will not compress until pressures well over those needed to avoid damage to a shotgun barrel. That is the reason that the loaders of shotgun shells containing those elements recomend that shooters do not use full chokes when using their products. The one shell which is different is a new load by Hevi-Shot called Classic Doubles. Unfortunately, Classic Doubles fracture before they can deform at around 1000 lbs. of pressure. This means that that Classic Double shot breaks into pieces before it can reach the target. Bismuth shotgun shells will not damage older shotguns. Is Hevishot the same as heavy-shot?

Hevi-Shot is a copyrighted brand name for a non-toxic (no lead) shot used in shotgun shells. It consists of an alloy of iron and tungsten, and has about the same density as lead shot. It is a very hard alloy, and requires the use of a special shot cup to prevent damaging the barrel of the shotgun. Other non-toxic shot includes steel and bismuth based metals.

What is the ammunition of a modern shotgun called?

Generally "Pellets" or "Shot" contained in "Shells". There are also solid shot "Slugs" similarly contained in "Shells". I'd use Shells ie "8 shotgun shells", unless you are specifying exactly the type.

The letters BB indicate the size of the shot that is in the shotgun shell. This is telling you that your shot size in the shell is the same size as used in BB guns.
