Fuse box-most likely under hood. Owners manual will state which one it is in the box. There is not a diagram since they don't come apart-you just plug in a replacement.

Mercury Sable was created in 1986.
The 1997 Mercury Sable does not have a timing belt, it has a timing chain that normally requires no replacement and should last the life of the engine.
The first clue would be if the car doesn't turn over :)
