I have the diagram that I got off ALLDATA. "GM does not provide a timing mark diagram for belt installion without using the special tool(s) listed in the Timing Belt service procedure." But I did mine without and only used two vice-clamps to hold the front to cams in line and the back two. Line those marks up and the Crank's mark will need to be set about at "2 o'clock" its wierd but that's how they are made.

== == Well, it's kinda necessary to know the year of the Monte as well as the engine before an answer to the question would be possible. 1997
There is no timing belt. It has a timing chain that should last 150K at the least. Chevy says its not wearable.
Loosen distributor until you can barely turn by hand. Time by ear until engine sounds good, then drive under load (up hill). If you hear engine pre-detonation (pinging), retard timing slightly until it stops. Tighten distributor. If no ping..advance until it does, then retard just until it stops, tighten dist...........
Sounds like timing is off,you didn't brake your timing belt did you.
On the passenger side, next to the door
Depends on what engine and what year Monte Carlo you're referring to...
There was no Monte Carlo in 2008, their final year was 2007.
