Nephrite jade is extremely abundant, and found all over the world. Mostly in Canada, but also China, New Zealand, USA, Taiwan, Russia.

Jadeite jade is much less abundant and therefore is much more expensive, found in mostly in Myanmar, and some in the USA.

It wasn't really discovered, but was used by the Mayans and East Asians (mainly) for thousnds of years. I watched a whole documentary on the Mayan use of jade. They thought it was the key to the aftrelife.

Jade is actually a rock composed mainly of the minerals jadeite or actinolite. Jade can be found in many places including Big Sur, California, Wyoming, Burma, Russia, and China.
