Should be on the barrel by the breech. It may be partially covered by the stock. In that case you will have to remove it.
Please include the serial number in your question to get the right answer.
It will be stamped right into the action. (The part the bolt slides back and forth in)
The serial number is stamped into the steel on the bottom forward edge of the receiver frame right next to where the magazine tubes enters the action. Bert H.

The model 311 was made from 1941 to 1989, but since you have a serial number I would guess yours was made after the Gun Control Act of 1968. You could probably find out by contacting Savage Arms at the related link posted on the right side of this page.
You need to post the model number of the gun. It will be stamped right into the barrel.
If I am reading the question right, your rifle was made in 1910. The Savage 99 was made in several different configurations, and we would need to know which you have. Also, condition is extremely important. sales@countrygunsmith.net
There isn't one. Rimfire rifles made prior to the Gun Control Act of 1968 were not required to have unique serial numbers, and most Savage .22 rifles did not. Before World War II, all Savage model 4 rifles were made with beautiful hand-carved walnut stocks and checkered grips. The only other gun in my collection that has such fine carving is a $1000.00 Sako. If your gun has checkering, chances are its an early issue, probably before 1940. I just found one of these beautys in my local gun shop for only $65.00! Needless to say, I pounced! ----------------------------------------------- April 2011 I have three pre-WWII Savage rifles (a Model 3 and two Model 5's). They all have serial numbers. Remove the takedown screw and remove the barrel/receiver from the stock. Look at the bottom of the receiver on the right side for the serial number. That's where mine are.
