=Answer= I know this took a long time for you to come to this decision and it was very hard on you. I would highly suggest you seek out a specialist through your family doctor that deals with autistic children. They will be able to advise you where you can put your son. I have read a lot about austistic children and if they are placed in a facility that deals with autism there is a fairly high rate of success as far as settling down the child for longer periods of time so the child can have visits at home. Good luck & God Bless

Most lay individuals will not know what to look for to adequately identify a true case of Autism. Autism is nothing to guess at and/or procrastinate getting professional help for if you feel a child under your care may have symptomatic tendencies toward this condition. Thus, please seek qualified professional help. Your family doctor would be a good place to start. That being said, if you are just looking for information about Autism for personal reasons go to the following site. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/autism/DS00348/DSECTION=2 You will find all the information you are looking for - just do not attempt to diagnose this condition in reality without a qualified mentor. Viper1 THERE IS NO ACTUAL "TEST" for autism, but rather various behaviors that are considered to be in the "spectrum" of autism that a professional observes in a child. There are many answers for this question. One is that studies on autism have led us to new findings about the brain, and how to provide help to people on the spectrum and their families. But more than that, autism is important because it creates a diversity among people. Although people with autism are impaired in some aspects, they are also extremely intelligent and capable of extraordinary things, such hyperlexia (reading before anyone has even taught them and often at a very young age) and extreme memory recall. Many people on the spectrum have gone on to be successful. Autism Speaks is an organization devoted to discovering more about autism, and their website is a good place for accurate information.
