The pyramids were like large tombs for upper class people like pharaohs and priests. There was a 40 plus day spiritual ritual ceremony, preparing the body for the afterlife. The pyramids stopped being built because it was just a sign where riches lied for tomb robbers, so they made underground tombs, the same purpose and inside as a pyramid would.
