In 1802 the British decided to document the highest mountains in the world, the Surveyor General of India at the time, Andrew Waugh, "discovered" Everest and wanted to know its name for the recordings, he found that in had multiple names, ranging from "Sargarmatha" meaning "mother of the Universe" to "Chomulangma" meaning "Goddess of Snows"

Waugh then had to either choose one, or make up his own. He decided on the latter and named it after his predecessor Colonel Sir George Everest, (pronouned I-vir-rist) Everest argued that it was a stupid name and the locals wouldn't even be able to say it, but his objections were shrugged off and the name stuck.

Hop this helps :)
