Modernization had become a key factor that lead to a convenient transportation of Germans into the United States in 1850. With the invention of steam boats and steam trains, Germans took long, complicated, but cheap routes through Great Britain to get to the United States.

Also, for many, prospects were much better in the US than in Germany. Given that none of the German states had overseas colonies, the US became the preferred destination for most Germans who wanted to emigrate.

Key settlements of German farmers were in Pennnsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin. Later, some farmers settled further west, for example in Minnesota and North and South Dakota.
