The Japanese came in substantial numbers to Hawaii and the west coast of the United States. Many were employed in Hawaiian plantations. Some acquired farms on the mainland. Some became workers in factories or on railroads, although there were more Chinese employed in that capacity. Industries sought Japanese workers after the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882, until the Japanese were blocked as well in 1907 under the Gentleman's Agreement.
