There is no evidence outside of the Gospels of Luke and Matthew that Jesus was born in Bethlehem, and those two Gospels don't even agree on the details. Both from an archaeological perspective and from a perspective based on textual criticism of scripture, Jesus was most likely born in Nazareth.

Answer:Jesus was born in Bethlehem (Matthew 2:1; Luke 2:4-7). And these passages were added by their authors (especially Matthew's) in order to align their stories of Jesus' birth with their interpretation of the prophecies in the Old Testament book of Micah. This forced alignment of scripture is common in Matthew. Answer:Matthew and Luke say that Jesus was born in Bethlehem.

John indicates that Jesus was probably not born in Bethlehem.

The consensus of scholars is that neither of the nativity stories in Matthew and Luke is likely to be historically true. For this reason, Uta Ranke-Heinemann (Putting Away Childish Things) says that he was probably born in Nazareth.

A:We do not really know where or when Jesus was born. True, the Gospels of Matthew and Luke say that he was born in Bethlehem, but these claims were made in order to fulfil an apparent prophecy in the Hebrew scriptures. The improbable attempts that the two authors made to have Jesus born in Bethlehem and spend some of his childhood in Nazareth, along with the clear contradictions between Matthew and Luke, is evidence enough that neither account is likely to be true, meaning that we can not really say that Jesus was born in Bethlehem. The usual assumption would be that, being known as Jesus of Nazareth, he was born in Nazareth, in Galilee.
