Hebrews did (and still do) worship anywhere they want to. In ancient times, most of the worshiping was done in the Temple in Jerusalem. After it was destroyed in the year 70 C.E., synagogues and homes became the primary places for worship.

Answer:There is a misconception that worshiping in synagogues was less prevalent when the Temple stood. According to Torah-tradition, this is not the case. Every Jewish community had its synagogue(s) and houses of Torah-study, from Biblical times onward, whether or not the Temple stood.

The ancient Hebrews had a Temple in Jerusalem where animal sacrifices took place. They didn't have standardized prayer services until after the year 70 CE.

Answer:

The above answer is mistaken. Jews worshiped in the Temple and in synagogues at the same time. Our tradition states that prayers were standardized four hundred years before the Second Destruction (Talmud, Berakhot 33a).

Jews always worshiped in synagogues, even when the Holy Temple stood. Even within the Temple premises, there were several synagogues. During the Second Temple era, ancient Greek authors attest to the large synagogues that stood in all the countries where Jews lived. The Dioploston in Alexandria, for example, was famous for its size (Talmud, Tosefta Sukkah 4:6). In First Temple times also, synagogues served the same function that they do today (Talmud, Megillah 26b and Berakhot 31a).
