In Grand Detour, Illinois in 1837. The steel plow did not requir oxen to pull it; it was now light enough for horses.

The polished steel helped the thick sod soil of the Midwest slide off of it better so farmers didn't have to work as hard to plow the land.

JOHN DEERe did not invent the tractor, unless you include the Dain tractor experiments. The John Deere company bought out the Waterloo Boy Tractor Company in Waterloo, Iowa and then John Deere started selling Waterloo Boy Tractors and then the Model D which the Waterloo Boy Company had been experimenting with for a few years. John Deere came late to the traction engine market (tractors) but bought out a company in order to start with income and land right away.

He used a polished steel saw blade from a local saw mill (very large piece of polished steel). He heated it to bend it into the right curve to cut into the soil and turn the top layer. He reinforced the blade with more steel(not polished) and added an oak beam which could be hooked onto a horse. He did not invent the cast steel plow but he invented the polished steel plow. He saw the need for a better plow in the Midwest and used a discarded sawmill blade to create a polished plow to help cut and flip(Plow)the soil of the Midwest.

In 1837 John Deere introduced a steel plow, which made turning the heavy midwestern soil easier because soil did not stick to it as it did to wood or cast-iron plows.
