Hermann van Pels injured his thumb on a work detail sometime in October, 1944 in Auschwitz. Against the advice of Otto Frank and Sol de Liema, his two closest friends in the work group, he asked to be sent to sick bay. The next day, in a "sweep" of sickbay, he was sent to the gas chambers.
Herman van Pels was 46 when he died in Auschwitz.
