Elizabeth I came to the throne in 1558 after the death of her older half sister, Mary I. The true succession of the children of Henry VIII after he died, were: Edward VI, Mary I and then Elizabeth I.
She inherited the throne from her half sister queen Mary (bloody Mary) who died childless.

Queen Elizabeth I was the last of the Tudor monarchy. Her grandfather, Henry VII won the Battle of Bosworth in 22nd August 1485 against Richard III and then became King. Then Henry VIII (a king famous for his six wives) had a legitimate son (Edward) and two legitimate daughters (Mary and then Elizabeth). Edward was pronounced king at 9 but died young, Mary ruled for 5 years and then it was Elizabeth's turn.

(There is an interesting song called 'The Truth About the Tudors' that you might want to listen to!)
