Grant was born in Ohio and lived here with his parents until he went away to college to West Point , New York. After graduation from there he was in the army and went where they sent him. He met and married a woman who lived near St.Louis, Mo. After awhile he quit the army and lived with his wife on a farm near St,,Louis. He then moved to Galena , Illinois where he was living when the Civil War broke out and he rejoined the army.
