it depends on what you want to believe.some say it spawned from an English game called rounders.and you have the controversial doubleday theory.some credit Alexander cartwright(circa 1845) a New York bank teller. previously a child's game he adjustedthe length and with accordingly for adults.so the story goes.

i think baseball started in cooperstown New York. the reason because why else would they have the baseball hall of fame. defintly an American sport

The earliest known newspaper account of a Baseball game in the United States was published on September 11, 1845, in the New York Morning News, which announced a game that occurred the previous day. The first recorded Baseball game was played on October 6, 1845 at Elysian Fields, in Hoboken, New Jersey by fourteen members of the New York Knickerbockers Club.

Laws have been documentd protecting windows against baseballs as far back as 1791 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.

Rounders is one of the four official GAA sports. Along with Gaelic Football, Hurling and Handball, Rounders was included in the original GAA charter back in 1884.

Rounders is a bat and ball game and is not that dis-similar to baseball. Indeed it is now generally accepted that Baseball is derived from Rounders in some form or other, as it has been played in this island for a couple of hundred years now and was probably brought over to America by the early settlers.

I think baseball started in Russia or Greece because I checked out a different web page and it said somewhere in England.

there is an oil painting which has been dated to the late 1700's and it depicts two boys holding what appear to be a baseball and a baseball bat by a painter who only painted in Massachusetts, so I think that's enough to say it started in the late 1700's.
