The Syrian or Golden Hamsters come from the deserts of North Africa. They Were also wild in the middle east. Infact, they haven't been in captivity for very long. Knowing about their surroundings can help you to look after your hamster.
The hamsters we keep as pets are Syrian hamsters, and come from the Mount Aleppo region of Syria. A small colony was captured in the 1940s, and from them almost all pet Syrian hamsters come. They were originally imported into the US to Louisiana as research animals at a leprosy center. Various species of hamsters occur in many parts of the Old World. For example, in Europe there is the black bellied hamster. And we now keep as pets Siberian dwarf hamsters, which come, of course, from Siberia, where they tend to live in large colonies in the permafrost.

I'm not sure why, but you can train your hamster to become not nocturnal. The best way is to put it in a room separate from an open area. Close the windows in the daytime and leave the lights on at night. If your hamster is young enough, after a couple of weeks your hamster will be trained.
Hamsters not only come out at night to play on their wheel but probably when the lights are out and you are not in the room. Hamsters prefer the darkness because they are not nocturnal but they can see better at night.it is almost as if it was really dark and you had supper night vision goggles.
