Bob Marley was born Feb 6, 1945, in the village of Nine Mile in Saint Ann Parish, Jamaica as Nesta Robert Marley. His father, Norval Sinclair Marley, was a Jamaican of mixed English and Syrian-Jewish descent whose family came from Sussex, England. Norval was a captain in the Royal Marines, as well as a plantation overseer, when he married Cedella Booker, an Afro-Jamaican then 18 years old. Norval provided financial support for his wife and child, but seldom saw them, as he was often away on trips. In 1955, when Bob Marley was 10 years old, his father died of a heart attack at age 70.

Bob Marley received a moderate Catholic upbringing by his mother Cedella, who left him 1958 in order to seek her fortune in the capital of Jamaica, Kingston. Bob was by then only 13 years old. He followed to Kingston a few months later. Bob was quite often teased by other children for his lighter skin, his different hair and slim nose. They called him a "half-castle" and other things.

In Kingston Bob (he was called "Robbie" by then) and his mother ended up in the slums of Trenchtown and the mother earned a living for both of them through temporary jobs. Bob finished elementary school in Trench Town 1960. First he only got temporary jobs as shoe shiners. Later he started working as a welder apprentice.

He got a very good friend in Neville Livingstone, better known as Bunny Wailer. During two years Bob's mother and Neville's father were a couple, living together. They got a daughter together - a little sister to Bob and Neville. She now lives in the U.S. Bob and Bunny were step siblings and had a strong common interest in singing and music. They started to take singing lessons 1959, when they still were in school, in the evenings by Joe Higgs, a local singer. At a jam session with Higgs, they met a very tall boy named Hubert McIntosh (soon known as Peter Tosh), who had similar musical ambitions.

In 1962, when Bob was 17, he recorded his first two songs, "Judge Not" and "One Cup of Coffee", with local music producer Leslie Kong. The music was called "ska". The singles sold almost not at all, and was not played by the mobile discos - the "sound systems".

In autumn1962, Bob, Neville, Peter met Junior Braithwaite, Beverley Kelso, and Cherry Smith and formed a ska vocalist group, calling themselves "The Teenagers". They later changed their name to "The Wailing Rudeboys", then to "The Wailing Wailers", at which point they were discovered by record producer Coxsone Dodd, and finally to "The Wailers".

The Wailing Wailers had a huge local jamaican hit with the song "Simmer Down", which was released in January 1963, one month before Bob's 18th birthday.

On Feb. 6, 1945, Robert Nesta Marley was born in Jamaica in Nine Miles within the Parish of St.Ann. His mother was an 18 year old Jamaican woman, Cedella Booker. Bob's father was a 50 year old English captain, Norval Sinclair Marley, who was stationed in Jamaica. Bob spent his early years with his mother in St. Ann, then during his teens they moved to Kingston, the capitol of Jamaica. Settling in Trench Town, a shanty town with in Kingston, Bob experienced a childhood filled with poverty and violence. After attending the Stepney School in Kingston, Bob spent some time aquiring a trade as a welder. During his youth, Bob developed a love for singing early on through his involvement in the church choir and the encouragement from friend Desmond Dekker.

So no, he did not have the best childhood, he had a mother of 18 and a father of 50, he suffered of poverty and violence (abuse) but he never gave up his dreams and turned out to be a greater legend than the rich kids in his time!
