When Minos was vying for the throne of Knossos, he begged Poseidon (their chief god) to show him favor. He sent the Cretan Bull from the spray of the ocean. Minos was to display the bull, then sacrifice it, but he didn't. He kept the bull as a sign of his divine favor. So Poseidon, angry at Minos for breaking their pact, make Pasiphae fall in love with the Bull. She has Daedalus create a wooden cow-suit with which she can copulate with the creature. The offspring from that union was called by the Minoans, Asterion, but the Greeks just called it Minotaur (Minos' Bull).
