Where did pitbulls originate?

Pitbull type of dogs were first bred by mixing terriers (especially the fox terrier) with bulldogs. For example the bull terrier is a mixture of the 2 breeds I just mentioned.

A pitbull comes from two different dogs. One is an unknown show breed and the other is an extinct hunting breed. The hunting breed takes 3 different breeds to make while the unknown breed takes only two. Therefore to make a pitbull it takes at least 5-7 other dogs. The breeds came from Europe.

Jonh Colby is a know early breeder of pitbulls. He inported fighting from England and began mixing them with the fighting dogs from America. Pitbulls are well known for its intelligence, strength, and loyalty.

But Some believe the dogs of today are largely unchanged and are the "pure" bulldog of old. If you read stories and view prints and paintings of old bull baiting dogs you could easily be talking about the modern American Pit Bull Terrier. The same looks existed in England and in the Americas based on drawings found in an old Victorian house in the south, showing Indians in their winter camp keeping the males apart. A drawing also shows a male dog alone showing the dog from close. This drawings were not signed by the author but I have seen them in a museum about 20 years ago when I stationed in ft. Campell, Kentucky. I can't find them in the internet so I cant give the link.

The theory that the Boxer breed was used to help create the Pitbull breed, has a known fact that it is not true. Boxers play like boxers throwing punches but they don't bit other dogs.

The pit bull's ancestry can be traced back to roughly the 12th century, when European hunters cross-bred the molossus, an early mastiff, with the Bellenbeiser, or bull-biter--which became known as the bulldog--was used to attack dangerous game animals. With their powerful jaws, bulldogs could penetrate a tough hide, slash muscle, crush bone, and grip like a vise. While other dogs could track wild boar and bear, only the bulldog had the mettle to clamp its jaws on the larger animal's nose and hold it, allowing the hunter to move in for the kill.
