The explosions of the two atom bombs actually exploded in the sky. The atom bombs were released over Hiroshima, Japan and Nagasaki, Japan in August of 1945. The blast, though exploding in the sky, virtually incinerated everything and everyone on the ground for miles around in those cities. 240,000 total died from those blasts either instantly or later from radiation poisoning.
