The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" Church) was founded in Palmyra, New York. Church members vountarily moved from there to Kirtland, Ohio to join with a large group of converts in the area. Kirtland soon turned into a hostile environment, and Church members moved to Missouri (around the Independence area). The Governor of Missouri issued an extermination order against the Mormons, who then moved to Nauvoo, Illinois. Upon the muder of Joseph Smith, the Mormons were ordered to leave the city, so they left the country and settled in what is now Salt Lake City, Utah. (At the time, the area was part of Mexico)
