I think it came from the name of an actual apple type/brand but to avoid confusion apple named it the Macintosh
It came from a Apple Tree, only they spelled it a bit different.
That answer is good, but neglects the much more long lived Macintosh coat, which was invented by a Scottish chemist, who perfected the design of a waterproof fabric by welding two componets of the coat together.
Perhaps it was inspired by the renowned Scottish architect Chalres Rennie Macintosh?
