The term "Piano," as in the instrument comes from Piano-Forte. piano is translated to soft and forte is translated to loud. The pianos had the ability to become soft or loud depending on how they were played. The name has since been shortened. The reason for this ability and nomenclature is because other keyboard string instrument before it had one volume.
The piano, is from distingushing amounts of musicians, who established a louder and grander sound for the piano. The harpsichord, is likely related to the piano, but basically it was made to get louder and softer. The original piano's started out very plain, with little dynamic changes, and the new piano created, was much better. It used hammers, and strings, to create a cunning sound to cheer audiences in large king's homes, and many other formal places. The new piano, or known to them as Piano Forte ( the loud piano) was the new piano of today.
One of the first pianos was built by Bartolomeo Cristofori in Padua, which is now in Italy. It was before 1700, maybe several years earlier. Italy was interested in arts, including music. Therefore, they created many musical instruments and many terms from music theory are Italian.
If you are reffering to the name of the instrument then the proper name is actually pianoforte meaning (soft/loud). It was called this because it could be played both softly and heavily to get a quiet and loud sound. However, the title pianoforte (pronounced piano for-tay) just got too long to say over time so the nick name piano became more and more used instead of the proper name. So apparently now the piano can only be played softly! ;)
