Water vapor is a constant component of the volcanic emissions. This water vapor is believed to be from the early steam from the interior of the earth's mantle. Active volcanoes serve as an outlet for all the pent up vapor.

There are two potential sources. First, stratovolcanoes are most commonly found near subduction zones, where oceanic crust slips into the mantle. This crust takes some seawater with it where the water then mixes with mantle rock. Second, water can seep down into the volcano from outside either from precipitation or, in the case of island volcanoes, the ocean.
