The animals most commonly recognised as kangaroos are grazing animals, and they only eat fresh grass and new shoots. Consequently, they are a semi-nomadic animal, roaming in "mobs" in search of healthy food sources. They seem to have an innate awareness of where the rains have been, or are coming, and they will often move to those areas. They prefer open plains, grasslands and open bushland which is not too densely packed with trees.
However, there are over 60 species of kangaroos, and they find food and shelter in different habitats. Wallabies prefer more covered bushland, except for rock wallabies, which prefer rocky cliffs and hillsides. Tree kangaroos live in rain forests, where they feed on broad leafed rainforest vegetation and fruits.
The tree kangaroos are the only species of kangaroos which live and shelter in trees. They are short, squat kangaroos with strong hind limbs, specially adapted for climbing in trees in the rainforests of northern Australia and New Guinea. They prefer broad-leafed trees with solid limbs, but they are very agile in a variety of rainforest trees.
Kangaroos live out in the one and do not make or build shelters of any kind. When shelter is required, they seek protection under trees, in caves or under cliff overhangs.

A kangaroo sleeps on the ground. It does not have a nest although it might sometimes use the shelter of a cliff overhang or open cave.

The bush provides for a kangaroo's needs much better than the desert does. The bush and grasslands have all the food a kangaroo requires, such as fresh shoots and grasses, whereas the desert does not. The bush also offers shelter during the hot day, or during rain.

The Ord's Kangaroo rat lives mainly on seeds, as well as plant parts and insects. It finds its food in the dry regions where it lives, in the vegetation that inhabits these regions.

Animals are adapted to find food and shelter in whatever area they evolve in. Monkeys have evolved to find food and shelter in the rainforest, but there are also other areas of the world where you can find monkeys.
