You will have to figure out what model it is first. If it is a really old gun, try to identify it from Flayerman's Guide to Antique American Firearms and if it is modern look in Gun Trader's Guide. Both of these books should be available at your local library.

Where will the model number be on a revolver?

Not all revolvers HAVE a model number- and those that DO do not have it marked on all revolvers. For NEWER Smith & Wesson revolvers, open the cylinder, and look on the part of the frame that is covered by the crane (crane connects the cylinder to the frame) You might see something like 10-5, indicating a Model 10, 5th change. But not all S&Ws had a model number.

How do you find the model of a smith and Wesson?

No model numbers used before @ 1957. After that, look inside the crane/yoke area.
