A hoe is a gardening tool. It has a flat metal end at 90-degrees to the handle. The long handle, usually solid wood (but can be plastic) is over 5-feet in length to allow comfortable ease of use. A human grasps the handle, usually with the dominant hand within 3-inches of the top, with the other hand placed about 10-12 inches lower on the handle. The metal edge of the hoe is struck against the ground (unbroken ground or tilled soil) and the person draws the hoe back toward the person's feet. The purpose is to break apart and turn the soil. Either corner or longer edge of the hoe can be used to break a weed from its roots and to dig out weed roots and separate them from soil.
A hoe can be bought at any hardware store, home and garden store, general department store (in gardening supplies), as well as from some nurseries or lawn and garden businesses. Children's sizes, in plastic, are also available.
